What ‘cut the carbon’ really means.
Cut the Carbon
There is a lot of talk in the press and media these days about cutting the carbon. But what the heck are they on about? What carbon and who should be cutting it? Why should we cut the carbon? And what with? A carbon pencil, no doubt? Or is that a graphite pencil?
What everyone really means is we should be cutting our carbon output from our homes and businesses. When you burn any fossil fuel you produce CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) as a waste product, CO2 has been proven to increase the temperature of our planet, global warming, which if it proceeds unchecked will have calamitous results for us all.
The government has signed up to stringent targets to cut the amount of CO2 that is released into the atmosphere, in fact it is planning on cutting CO2 emissions by 34 per cent of 1990 levels by 2020. Which is quite a big cut to achieve and left to market forces to make these cuts through their own efficiencies would be a long and arduous task, so the government is trying to incentivize us all to cut our own carbon output.
The flagship initiative in the UK is called The Green Deal. The idea is to get us all to think about the insulation and heating needed in the places where we live and work. If we used less energy to heat our homes and businesses we would be producing less C02 and in turn we would be… ‘cutting carbon’, simple! Well simple to a degree first of all there needs to be a whole system of Green Deal Providers and Installers set up to help implement the Government’s initiative.
‘Use less’, is a simple mantra to follow and is what the Government wants us to do and in these times of austerity. If we all used less power and more renewable energy sources the goals that have been set out by this and the previous Government can be achieved. Cutting carbon is going to be talked about a lot over the coming months and years and we hope that this simple explanation of what people mean when they talk about ‘cutting carbon’ will help you to understand the term as it’s a central theme to the Green Deal. Cutting carbon gases is going to be the measurement by which the Government and the International community will use to decide how successful the whole scheme has been in the UK.
