Biomass boilers to be included in the Green Deal

Biomass Boilers

The thing to remember when considering changing your boiler is that you are no longer restricted to just gas or oil fired boilers.  The Green Deal’s main objective is to reduce the UK’s C02 output and so one way is to swop gas and oil fired boilers to more carbon neutral sources.

Biomass; relates to newly dead biological matter that can be burned in a boiler. The fact is that the same amount of C02 is emitted when you burn the fuel as the plants released Oxygen when they were living making them carbon neutral.  The term Biomass can also relate to animal and vegetable waste, there are power stations that can run on biological matter too.

The UK has huge potential to use the current waste that is produce both by domestic food waste as well as animal waste to produce much of the nations power, some suggest that 30% of the nations power could be produced via Biomass power stations.

On a smaller scale you can have a Biomass boiler installed into most domestic and commercial properties without too much alteration.  The main concerns when considering a biomass boiler are that they are usually bigger than a conventional gas or oil boiler and that the fuel for the boiler will need to be stored close to the boiler and they take up quite a bit of room when compared to oil. Deliveries need to be scheduled to keep a constant supply on standby much the same as oil based systems. Because of the bulky nature of biomass fuel it’s also worth considering the access that will be needed for the delivery truck.

Biomass boilers and the Green Deal are going to be interesting bed fellows and the commercial businesses sector is probably where most biomass boilers will be installed as they have the increased space that most systems require.  Domestic consumers shouldn’t dismiss Biomass boilers especially in rural areas where oil boilers have been installed. The current price of domestic oil is unlikely to fall in price thus making a switch to a Biomass system more inviting.
