The Government seems to have gone out of its way to make a difficult subject even more complicated. A review of the Governments current energy  policy has been branded ‘unworkable’, which isn’t the best news for the Green Deal.

The Green Deal is coming into effect in October 2012 and it is part of the Governments grand scheme to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, compared to 1990 levels. It’s a big ask so even little changes in behaviour can make differences. What is becoming evident is that the big 6 energy companies are very well placed to monopolises their positions and have some sway over Government policy.

The current coalition seems to have dithered over their long term objectives for Energy policy and this has made investors look elsewhere. Without concrete action on long term objectives and goals no one is investing the large amounts of money that the Government needs to make in updating the power network we currently have.

The Green Deal has the potential to employ many people in new and emerging technologies and it can distance the public from the fluctuations in the wholesale energy markets. With this in mind we hope to see some more commitment s from the government over the coming months to the initiative. Which politician wouldn’t want to stand up and say ‘Look at all these jobs I have created.’

On a local level the Green Deal can work and will give people like you and me access to capital to invest in our homes and businesses. With the austerity of cuts biting hard and an economy growing at a snail’s pace the one thing that the UK can look forward to after the Olympics is some low interest rate loans, happy days. We hope that the Government isn’t suffering from some sort of stage fright, it seems to be working through a difficult patch and we are hoping, on behalf of all the jobs in the balance, that the Green Deal isn’t their achilles heel.

If you were in charge of the Government energy policy for the next few years, what would you do? Answers below, let’s hear your thinking…
