The Green Deal will Succeed… by how much is the question?
The News today that British Gas and Npower are going to raise its prices by up to 9% must be music to the ears for the Green Deal. The Green Deal is tied to energy prices because it will make more homes eligible for the Green Deals ‘Golden Rule’, which states that the savings of any measure must out weigh the costs. Now that gas prices are going up it makes more sense than ever to employ other technologies to micro generate power.
The whole initiative is suffering from a false start, peoples hopes were raised by the Governments announcements that it would launch in October, but this was a false dawn. The latest news I can glean form providers like British Gas is they are booking in assessments for late February 2013, so we are looking at works beginning in the spring.
As the energy companies continue to argue that there is nothing they can do about the open market prices for gas and electricity it makes sense for all those involved in the Green Deal to be pushing hard at promoting its benefits. It was especially pleasing to hear the head of British Gas declare that their company had moved a quarter of their customers onto better tariffs in recent months and this would off set the price hike. What it says to many is that the energy companies have been miss selling their over complicated tariffs for years and taking profit from this. In fact Nick Clegg announced this was going to happen in April this year, so at least there is some movement in the right direction.
There are things we can all do between now and next year to take full advantage of the Green Deal.
