Energy policy gets watered down as Osborne gets ready to torch Green agenda
George Osborne is about to give his autumn statement today and its more than likely that he is going to make cuts to Britain’s commitments to generating Green Energy. In a move towards generating energy from gas households could see their household bills continue to increase.
The Green Deal is set to make home generating of power an easier reality for us all and as the government keeps moving towards more and more reliance on fossil fuels the status quo will continue. Damian Carrington makes a connection between the Governments enthusiasm for Shale gas and its effect that it had on the US domestic gas price. (The USA is seeing a massive fall in natural gas prices; they are at a historic low, so low it’s not worth drilling in some cases) The UK has some reserves of natural gas, but even industry insiders are unsure of how much is going to be extracted by fracking.
What does this mean to you and me? If Osborne goes for cheap natural gas, which will free up money to spend on an election war chest, he will lock households into buying energy off the big six energy companies. The UK has built a massive Liquid Natural Gas terminal in south Wales to cope with a huge increase the use of Natural Gas to power new Natural Gas power stations.
Don’t panic! There is a get out! This is where the Green Deal can save us all form enslaving us to outdated technology, by promoting micro power generation. You can, if your home or business is properly insulated, be eligible for Green Deal funding to buy your own micro power station. It’s just a pity that the Government won’t use the leverage it has on the industry to really promote the Green Deal and catapult the UK Green energy sector to be a world beating trail blazer.
The politicians are doing what politicians do best, taking with one hand and giving with the other, it just seems there is always a short term agenda that is being followed instead of a longer term solution. Luckily, you and I have the option to try and protect ourselves from the ravages of both the international energy markets and the local level politics… Will the Green Deal live up to the hype? Lets hear your comments below…
