Energy Efficient Products to Slash Your Business Electricity Bill
If you’re running a business, you won’t need me to tell you that there are a lot of overheads. What with wages, bills, and other additional costs; it can sometimes seem like all your profit is heading straight out the door.
And while these aren’t costs you can forget about, they are costs you can control. For example, it is easier than you might think to slash your business electricity bill; and there won’t be any working by candlelight involved.
Here, we take a look at five energy efficient products that can help you cut your usage, and save on your office electric bill:
1. Smart power strips
When you close the doors at night, are you sure you’ve switched everything off? According to USwitch, 46% of UK business electrical consumption happens out of office hours. That means that you’re paying over the odds for electricity you didn’t know you were using. By investing in a smart power strip, you can help cut this usage.
These handy devices will cut the power going to up to 5 other devices, when the primary source is turned off. For example, you could set it so that when one computer is turned off; your photocopier and printer turn off too.
2. Lamp timers
Do you need all your office lights on, all of the time? Probably not if you have a lot of natural light, and certainly not in the summer. But do you really have the time to keep switching them on and off? Probably not.
Lamp timers are a great energy efficient product that can help you cut your energy bill, without having to work in complete darkness. Why not set them so that the lights are on between 8.30AM-10.30AM and then again from 4PM?
You might be surprised at how much money these can save you. Lamp timers can also be used on things like your water cooler or vending machines.
3. Laptops vs. PCs Did you know that, over the course of 12 months, laptops use up to 85% less electricity than PCs?
Armed with this knowledge, laptops are surely the most energy efficient choice. If your computing needs can be met with laptops, you should consider swapping. If you need a desktop, can you swap to a single screen, and smaller components? Still need a super powerful PC? Make sure the ones in your office are of the highest energy efficiency.
You should also remember to turn any laptop or computer off at the end of the day. Leaving them on standby will only cost you financially.
4. Energy saving light bulbs
It might seem like the obvious choice, but swapping to energy saving light bulbs can really help you save, and slash your energy bills. They work by using less energy than the average light bulb, and last so much longer making them doubly cost-effective.
Switch to these bulbs in as many of your light fittings as possible, and you’ll certainly notice a difference in your annual electricity bill.
5. Turn things off
Okay, so we’ve cheated a bit with number 5 as it’s not really an energy efficient product; but turning your lights and electrical devices off when they’re not in use can make a real difference to your business’s bills.
Make sure that all the lights – including car parks and external signage – are switched off at night and over the weekend. You should also make sure all your computers, printers, vending machines, and coffee dispensers are turned off too. You’d be surprised at how much extra electricity you’re using.
By using these, and a whole host of other, energy efficient products it’s easier than you might think to slash your business’s energy bill. We’d love to know what your favourite products and top tips are?
