Heating Controls

Heating controls will be included in the Green Deal. There are two basic types of heating controls that are commonly used in the UK today:

• Room Thermostats
• Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)

Room Thermostats regulate the heat in a room or building and TRV’s are used for precise control of individual radiators. By installing both into a property, both commercial and domestic, you can have much more accurate control of when the heat is on and to what desired temperature.

Room Thermostats

Modern room thermostats can be programmed to regulate the heat in a building to an exact temperature. By changing the temperature down 1 degree a domestic customer can achieve a saving of £55 per year according to the energy saving trust. For commercial applications these savings can be much higher. There are options to set a 7 day program for some room thermostats as people change their routines over a week, this will also help to improve efficiency further.

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)

TRV’s are a cost effective way to control the heat in a property. Precise control over the amount of heat a room receives is a good way to cut heat waste. Imagine there are rooms in a house that are rarely used, like a spare room you will be able to effectively turn radiators off in those rooms when they are not being used. It should be mentioned that TRV’s need to be free from curtains and the air is allowed to flow around them. If you have radiator covers you should consider either removing them or monitoring the values closely as they will be registering a warmer room.

The Green Deal is both about conserving the energy that we currently use and cutting the costs of producing our own energy through micro-generation. By focusing on insulation and heat control, property owners will then be eligible for micro-generation measures.
