According to Energy Savings Trust, in a typical three-bedroom semi detached home heated by gas, having a room thermostat installed can save up to about £70 of your heating bill and 280kg carbon dioxide a year. You can even use your controls more effectively and turn down your thermostat by one degree, which will let you save around £65 and 260kg carbon dioxide a year.

Types of Hot Water Controls

Room Thermostats

These thermostats turn the heating in your home off, after it has reached the temperature you have set. It basically prevents your house of getting warmer than it needs to be.

The programmable room thermostats have combined time and temperature controls, which allows you to set different temperatures for different times of the day.

Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)

Thermostatic radiator valves reduce the flow of water, which is in the radiator they are fitted to when the temperature goes above a certain setting. Hence, using a low level temperature will use up less energy and save you much more money.

Cylinder Thermostat

The hot water being stored in a cylinder can be prevented of getting hotter than it needs to be via a cylinder thermostat. Once the water has reached the temperature you have set, the heat supply will automatically be cut off.

Programmers and Time Controls

These devices are perfect life hacks, in order to save up on your heating bill and reduce energy wastage.

Programmers allow you to set timers  and switch your heating off, when you aren’t at home. Most models can set the time periods for central heating and domestic hot water.

Timers can be also used to set a ‘warm up’ and ‘cool down’ time. For instance, it will make sure that the heating already warms-up before you wake up and turns off slowly before you leave. Hence, insulation is an important factor, such as door insulation or windows, in order to keep the heat in your home and save money on heating.
